MDD500

The MDD500 is the 5 in high-resolution display, on the same ESP32-P4 and MIPI-DSI platform as the MDD410. It shows the same 720 × 720 design larger, behind a window with rounded corners, and its touch is built into the panel.

Show the same pixels larger

The MDD500 shows the 720 × 720 canvas on a 5.08 in panel with an active area 91.37 mm across, at 0.1269 mm per pixel. Every element is about 27 % larger than on the MDD410.

Keep clear of the rounded corners

The visible window is the black print on the cover glass, 91.77 mm square with 7.34 mm corner radii. On the canvas each corner is an arc of 58 px radius centred 56 px in from both edges, and text and touch targets stay at least 8 px inside it. This is the safe area every layout follows, described under Layout.

  • Custom glass. The proposed custom cover glass keeps the stock window and changes only the outline, adding a separate window for the ambient light sensor, so the safe area holds for both.

Use the backlight as the night dimmer

The MDD500 panel is a high-brightness panel at 1,100 cd/m² typical. At night its backlight sets the brightness, down to a floor of 2.3 cd/m² for white, as described under Night.

Check the in-cell touch with water

Touch is handled by the panel's own driver, the Jadard JD9365TX, as in-cell touch. Its behaviour with water on the glass is not yet known and is checked on the bench.

Keep the screen still during flash writes

On the ESP32-P4 the video driver restarts its pixel transfer from an interrupt once per frame. Product firmware sets CONFIG_LCD_DSI_ISR_CACHE_SAFE=y, or every settings save or firmware update flashes the screen light blue.

  • Reason. By default the interrupt cannot run while the chip reads or writes flash, so the transfer stalls and the MIPI bridge shows its blue underrun colour.
  • Applies to the MDD410 as well, which shares the platform.

Not yet ruled
  • How the JD9365TX in-cell touch behaves with water and with gloves.
  • Whether the 2.3 cd/m² backlight floor is dark enough, which depends on measuring it on a MIPI board.
  • Smooth dark gradients, which are judged only once the panel runs at 24-bit colour. The bench viewer runs it at 16-bit, where the night surround shows steps.

These are tracked in ux/specs/interaction/touch.md, SCY-SW-DECISION-PALETTE-001 and ux/design/LEARNINGS.md, entry 23.
