MDD400

The MDD400 is the entry-level display. It keeps the proven DWIN T5L smart display with its DGUS page system and an ESP32-S3 host, at lower resolution and lower brightness than the MIPI products. Its pages were in service at sea before these guidelines were written, and much of the guidelines' reasoning comes from them.

Take the design at two-thirds scale​

The MDD400 shows the 720 × 720 design on a 480 × 480 panel, taking every size and position at two-thirds scale.

Expect what DGUS cannot show​

The DGUS display draws prepared images and set variables, not a scene composed at run time, and it runs at 16-bit colour.

  • Rotation in steps. A needle or card turns in half-degree steps, the resolution of the DGUS rotation variables such as Hdg720.
  • Digits as images. The in-service build drew each digit as a fixed-size image, which also hid the unequal digit widths of Segoe UI Black.
  • No real transparency. A frosted-glass dialog was tried on the MDD400 with a speckled background and could not be made to work.

Keep what the MDD400 proved​

These parts of the guidelines were in service on the MDD400 before they were written down.

  • Unlock. The swipe up to unlock comes from the MDD400 firmware.
  • Auto-lock. The display locks after 30 s without a touch.
  • Pages. The wind, compass and navigation pages were in service, and the navigation page is the source of the primary, four secondary and graphic layout.
  • Night. The night dimming and the dark night palette were in service on the MDD400.

Not yet ruled
  • How the MDD400 renders parts of the design that need 24-bit colour, alpha or anti-aliasing, such as the recess wall, the needle's shadow and glow and the translucent readout window.
  • The MDD400's visible window and its corner safe area.
  • Whether the MDD400 takes the new typefaces, given that DGUS draws digits as images.

None of these is yet raised in a spec. The MDD400 firmware architecture is SCY-SW-STRATEGY-MDD400ARCH-001.
